At the 32nd European Conference of Optical Communication (ECOC) in Cannes,
France on 24-28 September, Tokyo-based Mitsubishi Electric Corp will display
what it says is the industry's first compact optical transceiver to comply
with dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) under the 10Gbps
Form-factor Pluggable Extended Multi-Source Agreement (XFP-E MSA), a
regulation for electric, optical, and mechanical interfaces agreed in March
2006.
The MF-10KWXB-002ZA module's wavelength range is 1530-1560nm (DWDM), and its
transmission range is up to 80km (for metropolitan area networks).
Multi-rate operation covers 9.95-11.1Gbps. The operating temperature range
is -5C-+70C.
Mitsubishi Electric says that, with the dissemination and increasing volume
of high-speed, high-volume communication services such as Voice over
Internet Protocol (VoIP), Internet Protocol Television and etc, there has
been a rush to expand the communications network in long-distance trunk
lines and metropolitan areas to keep up with increasing communication
traffic. To reduce network setup costs, device manufacturers have been
working to develop an optical transceiver capable of high-efficiency
transmission in a single unit.
Mitsubishi Electric has previously developed a 300-pin MSA compliant 10Gbps
DWDM transceiver module for optical communication. However, there was a need
for a more compact transceiver which could handle further increases in
transmission speed and volume and which could also allow 'hot swappable'
module exchange (without cutting electric current during maintenance), the
company says.
Using 48 of the new modules per optical fiber, Mitsubishi Electric says it
has attained a high-density transmission rate of 480Gpbs (48 multiplexed
wavelength of 10Gbps) per optical fiber. With a size of 48mm x 78mm x 13mm,
the module ha a volume 55% less than the previous 300-pin MSA model.
The transmission range has been increased to 9.95-11.1Gbps by using a high-performance phase-locked loop (PLL) circuit also adopted in previous transceivers, simplifying construction of optical communication systems with varying transmission rates, such as SONET/SDH, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, 10Gbps Fiber Channel and etc.
Using a newly developed electronic absorption (EA) laser allows operating
temperatures up to 20C higher than existing lasers, reducing the cost to
power consumption of cooling by more than half compared to 300-pin MSA
compliant modules. Power consumption is less than 6W.
Sample shipments of the MF-10KWXB-002ZA module will begin on October 1, with
full production beginning in January 2007.
