At the Lightfair International 2007 event in New York last week, LED maker Osram Opto Semiconductors of Regensburg, Germany announced that it is now producing samples of the most powerful version of its OSTAR LED product (for market launch this summer). The new cool-white LED produces a luminous flux of more than 1000 lumen, making it brighter than a 50W halogen lamp, suiting a wide range of applications in general lighting applications.
In mid-February Osram announced that it had developed the 1000lm OSTAR cold-white LED as part of the German government’s BMBF NanoLux program. Basing the new LED on the well-established OSTAR product (which has a luminous efficacy of 75lm/W at an operating current of 350mA) enabled rapid transfer of the latest performance levels from the development stage to the production stage, says Osram. The high luminous flux of the new version is due to optimizing the overall chip, package and epitaxial process, says Osram.
The new 1000lm OSTAR incorporates six closely packed 1mm2 high-power ThinGaN chips, yielding high brightness (e.g. a single OSTAR with a 38° reflector can illuminate a desk with more than 500 lux from a height of 2m).
