Lamina Inc of Westampton, NJ, USA, which was founded in 2001 and manufactures high-power LED light engines by combining high-brightness LEDs with its proprietary packaging technology, has raised $7m in a series D round of financing, led by Easton Capital Investment Group and joined by existing investors Morgenthaler Partners, Granite Global Ventures, Mellon Family Investments, RedShift Ventures and CID Equity Capital. Charles B. Hughes, a managing director of Easton Capital, has joined the board of directors.
Proceeds will be used to expand company operations and to move into the next stage of development and support the expansion of the worldwide marketing and sales plan for the firm’s growing product portfolio.
Lamina says that its proprietary packaging technology provides thermal management and interconnectivity, enabling the delivery of highly reliable and functional LED lighting solutions for lighting applications, the firm claims.
“Easton has already proven to us to have the relevant expertise and capital strength to help us accelerate our growth and take our company to the next level. We welcome Easton’s active participation in our board discussions, particularly on strategic growth issues,” says president and CEO Frank M. Shinneman.
“Market timing is everything in venture investing, and Lamina's products are hitting the market exactly when demand is taking off and when incandescent bulbs are being banned world-wide,” says chairman and founding venture capitalist Greg Blonder.
In mid-April at Euroluce (Europe’s premier lighting show) in Milan, Italy, Lamina unveiled and demonstrated its TitanTurbo line of light engines (will be debuted in New York at LightFair International 2007 on 8-10 May). Two models are available: a 3000K ‘warm white’ version that delivers more than 1000 lumens (equal in output to the widely used 75W PAR-30 halogen light and the equally popular 100W R-20 floodlight); and a 4700K ‘daylight white’ (cool) model that delivers more than 2000 lumens. Lamina is the first supplier of light engines with sufficient white-light luminence to easily and economically replace traditional lighting used in home, office, retail, commercial and exterior applications, it is claimed).
