Philips Lumileds Lighting Company says it has established new luminance performance records for solid-state lighting technology at 1 Amp. According to the company, for white devices, luminance of 38 meganits (Mcd/m2 ) was achieved, which is approximately 50% more luminance than that of an automotive headlamp halogen bulb (~25 meganits). For InGaN blue devices, the company achieved a radiance of 200 mW/mm2 sr. And for InGaN green devices, luminance of 37 meganits (Mcd/m2 ) was achieved.
Achievements such as these will go a long way to advancing the performance and design of light intensive applications, such as automotive headlamps, rear-projection televisions (RPTV), and commercial lighting, said the company. Automotive headlamps based on these LED products will generate light density exceeding that of typical automotive halogen bulbs, and in a fraction of the space. For LED RPTVs, Philips Lumileds anticipates that the luminance demonstrated by its new products will enable front-of-screen performance brighter than any LED based RPTV publicly demonstrated so far.
In other news from Philips Lumileds, the company confirmed that its Luxeon LEDs, AlInGaP SnapLEDs, and AlInGaP SuperFlux LEDs are all fully compliant with the EU RoHS (Restriction of the use of Hazardous Substances) Directive. These LEDs contain no lead, mercury or toxic gasses.
Effective in Europe from 1 July 2006, the RoHS directive bans new electrical and electronic equipment from containing more than agreed levels of lead, cadmium, mercury and a range of other substances from the EU market.
