Lighting manufacturer Osram GmbH of Munich, Germany has signed a licensing agreement that allows it to develop and deploy red, green and blue (RGB) lasers. It will use the optically pumped semiconductor laser (OPSL) intellectual property of Coherent Inc of Santa Clara, CA, USA in consumer applications such as laser-based projection TV displays and ‘pocket projectors’ for hand-held devices.
“Coherent developed and shipped multi-Watt RGB lasers and demonstrated laser projection television utilizing our OPS technology,” said Coherent's president and chief executive officer John Ambroseo. “We believe OSRAM is an excellent technology partner with the resources and business model necessary to develop this technology for the next phase of the consumer display market."
