Skyworks unveils ceramic-based filters for military and homeland security markets

At this week’s IEEE International Microwave Symposium (IMS 2011) in Baltimore, MD, USA (7–9 June), Skyworks Solutions Inc of Woburn, MA, USA, which manufactures high-reliability analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, has launched connectorized, high-power filters for military, homeland security, airborne and high-end commercial transceiver applications.

The firm says that the smaller, lighter and more portable ceramic-based solutions offer significant design benefits and flexibility compared with the more traditional and much larger metallic-cavity filters. Skyworks’ designs also offer smaller overall dimensions, resulting in significant space savings where high-power filtering is a requirement. “Our new filters exceed the power handling of traditional ceramic designs and more than meet critical demands from the military, homeland security and commercial markets,” says Mark Wolf, general manager of Skyworks’ Trans-Tech division.

The combined US market for homeland security products and services — purchased by federal, state and local governments, the intelligence community and the private sector — will increase at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.1% from $69bn in 2010 to $84bn in 2014, according to a report from the Homeland Security Research Corp. State and local spending ranks first with 23.7% of the overall market, while the US Defense Department ranks second with 22.5% and the Department of Homeland Security ranks third with 18.3% of total spending.

Skyworks says that the new surface-mount technology filters are available from 50W to 100W in a 12mm and 20mm coaxial resonator design. In addition, the filters offer ultra-high frequency up to 2100MHz.
