Avago Technologies of San Jose, CA, USA has launched its second series of hermetically sealed 3.3V high-gain optocouplers for use in aerospace, industrial and military applications.
Manufactured and tested on a MIL-PRF-38534 certified line, the ACPL-570xL/573xL/177xL series include single-, dual-, and quad-channel optocouplers that are capable of reliable operation over the full military temperature range of -55ºC to +125ºC. The low-voltage optocouplers are also suitable for microprocessor system interfaces, process control input/output isolation, voltage-level shifting, and logic ground isolation. The devices are a follow-on to the earlier release of the ACPL-267xL/268xL/560xL/563xL family of hermetic 3.3V logic gate optocouplers.
For designers of applications that operate in harsh environments, the trend is towards upgrades and new designs to reduce power consumption, which will allow system designers to take advantage of low-power components that are now on the market. The new 3.3V hermetic optocoupler series will help to reduce or eliminate the need for extra interface components or voltage converters. Also, the low-voltage hermetic optocouplers will help to simplify power supply design, as well as reducing board space and cost for manufacturers.
Each channel of the optocoupler contains a gallium arsenide phosphide (GaAsP) LED which is optically coupled to an integrated high-gain photon detector. In addition, the high-gain output stage features open-collector output, providing both lower saturation voltage (0.11V typical) and higher signal speed than is possible with conventional photo-Darlington optocouplers. The supply voltage can be operated at as low as 3.0V without adversely affecting parametric performance. The low input current requirement of 0.5mA contributes to low power consumption.
The ACPL-570xL/-573xL/-177xL optocouplers can be purchased as either a commercial-grade product or with full MIL-PRF-38534 Class Level H or K testing from DSCC Drawing 5962-08227. The hermetic optocouplers are also included in the DSCC Qualified Products Database Supplemental Information Sheets QPDSIS-38534 as Hybrid Microcircuits.
The ACPL-570xL/-573xL/-177xL series is priced from $43 in 1000-piece quantities.
